AOB4- Evaluation

When I was first given the brief, I was a little unsure of what I had to do. I decided, early on, however to produce some film promotion products to advertise a film called 'Hacking The Wood'. After looking at some other film promotion products I felt much happier about what I was going to do. The first meeting with the client helped me to work out how I was going to design the promotions and what needed to be done to make them stand out. This meeting helped me decide what products I would design, I would design a DVD cover, poster and website for a Storey Production thriller called 'Hacking the Wood'.

To attract people to go and see the film, the products I was going to design had to appeal to the target audience with my choice of typeface, layout and imagery. I chose the typeface 'all around the place' as I feel it looks a little eerie and almost like lettering would look, if scratched into the bark of a tree with a penknife. The bright red text is the colour of blood and also stands out and grabs the attention of the audience. The name for the film has been chosen as the hacking relates to hacking down the wood and also hacking into the computers. I used the wood because I thought this sounds creepy. These are all factors that I feel give off the genre of the film and are what my target audience will be attracted to.

The purpose of the film promotions was to advertise the film and bring about awareness of the film without giving too much away. The target audience of the products is 15-30 year olds who like crime-thrillers. I had to made the film promotions the same style as the film so that they would appeal to this age group and make them stand out against all the other films on offer. I feel I have done this very well and have really got it looking professional to appeal to the target film audience.

After completing what I thought was good promotion products, I presented it to the clients where they gave me ideas on how to improve it and make it the best it could be. They commented that the word 'THE' should be smaller on the poster and the fact that I hadn't specified the year of release of the film. I needed to use the spellcheck on the DVD cover, centre the text and reduce the size. I also needed to consider visual hierarchy as I had not drawn the eye to anything in particular on the cover.I went about making these changes and improving the products.

Throughout the work I kept checking back at examples of professional pieces and made sure that I had the right ideas and had followed the conventions. I feel this went well and it really helped me when I was completing the products to know what to include and where to put it.

To make these products I used my Macbook Pro because this is something I have easy access to and know how to use to as it is something I have been using solely for 2 years. By using my mac meant I could work on it at college and at home without the use memory sticks etc. Or the fear of losing all my work if the school computers went down. I design all the products on Photoshop because I know this and am reasonably familiar with this software with using it for the past 3 years. I was able to make a very good attempt at the products, have easy access to and I know how to use the tools needed to design the products. I used a Digital camera to take the pictures with, I again was used to using this and was happy with what I had to do.

When I had the meeting I felt that I took on board what the clients said and was able to respond by saying why I had the products like they were. The client said that I needed to work harder at arranging the writing and imagery on the products and very thinking what would look good where. I wanted to make the products the best they could be and so responded to the clients professional advise by changing or adding anything that they suggested. From having this meeting I was able to make some really needed improvements which really helped me make a good piece of work. By checking it and looking back to the professional examples this helped me also make improvements on the products by changing things around and adding in bits.

The client was very happy with the progress that I made from the draft to the final piece. The client was particularly happy with the purposeful design choices; making the typeface stand out on the website and the revamped DVD cover. He stated that he particularly liked the purposefully design choices  on making the revamped products really stand out to the audience. However he feels that I still need to give more attention to the layout and typeface on the DVD cover and really think clearly about the choice of imagery on the DVD cover. He felt that the poster was the weaker of the three as he feels the text is 'haphazard' and the four different type faces on the poster does not work well. This feedback will help me design the products even better should I look to improve them in the future.

If I were to do this again, I would take longer and give myself much more time on the planning and the drafting of the products before showing it to the client. This helps to ensure I get it right meaning that the client could focus on the smaller detail making the product the best it could be.
